Description

A BAC Wyvern GR5 of No.9 Squadron and 2 BAE Spitfire II F2's of No.1 Squadron sit on stanby at a small NADC airbase in Germany, along with a Luftwaffe Opel refueling truck. I'm either going to color this the old fashioned way or fire up Paint.Net to do a digital version.

Before you read on, want to guess which game featured the plane the Wyvern in based off of? Hint, it is unlocked after the B-2 Spirit.

Anywho, prepare to have your mind filled with useless information!

BAC (British Aircraft Corporation), best known for their line of Cold War reconnaissance and strike aircraft have kept the tradition in the Wyvern.

In 2015, after the Nationalist party took over in the UK (unlike Canada and the US, the UK started with only one Nationalist party, which later split into 3) much work was done to restore Britain's pre-WW2 superpower status. This meant that the country began restoring indigenous weapon design. Both the BAC Wyvern and the BAE Spitfire 2 came from this period, both were designed with the knowledge that they would operate along side each other, and both entered service in 2025.

Similar to the famous TSR-2 Sydney, the Wyvern acts in the recon/strike roles. They also revolve around the same design concepts. Using a mix of high speed and an unmatched amount of electronic countermeasures, they can punch inside enemy airspace and hit targets, retreating before interceptors can be alerted.

Unlike the Sydney, the Wyvern can fire two tactical nuclear warheads. Wyvern's carry the difficult task of being the UK's primary nuclear strike force, seeing as ICBM's have become unreliable with most major powers having some way of defeating them.

The Wyvern, when not carrying weapons, is an extremely effective reconnaissance platform, preforming similarly to the American U-2. Of course, the Wyvern can not only stay hidden from the human eye by flying at near space heights, but it can also stay hidden from radar thanks to its huge amount of jamming equipment. Recon Wyvern's have also been modified to intercept bombers.

The Wyvern uses two Rolls Royce EJZP 48 Engines, which operate similarly to those of other hypersonic jets such as the CF-205 and F-27. The Wyvern can reach speeds in the excess of Mach 6 and hit altitudes of 102 000 feet, slightly higher then the CF-205 and F-27, but lower then the American B-70L.

The BAE Spitfire 2 is designed to be a pure air superiority aircraft. This is something it does very well, even with it's rather outdated exterior appearance. Most likely, it would be outdated, if it weren't for it's reverse sweep wings, which have a larger surface, but are thin and short. These wings make the Spitfire II great at maneuvers. They create more lift then the more common delta and semi delta designs, allow the plane to reach acceptable high supersonic speeds and make it very light. The only weakness that comes with the small wings, is the planes inability to carry wing mounted weapons. Designers countered this issue by giving the Spitfire 2 a large internal weapons bay. Also, a feature only the Spitfire has, is the ability to carry weapons on the bay doors.

The Spitfire 2 also flies from the UK's fleet of 4 Queen Elizabeth Class Carriers, making up 85%+ of the fighters in the Navy's air arm (F-35's are still used as light bombers). The Navy's Spitfire II's became famous for their operations in the Battle of the East China Sea, where they logged more flight hours then every Seafire in WW2 within the 7 month span. They were also key in sinking the Chinese super carrier Guangdong

The Spitfire 2 is the only 5th/6th generation jet still in NADC service that isn't Hypersonic, it's Rolls Royce F146 (modified from the F136 in the F-35 II) allowing it modest speeds of around Mach 4.5 and heights of only 60 000 feet (yes, amazing for early 21st century...). Usually though, Spitfire II's aren't hindered by this weakness. They can easily dance around most OH and BVR weapons, forcing enemies to come close to the Spitfire, where they are quickly torn apart by it's 30mm canon, held in a large hump under the body of the aircraft.

Of course, Spitfire's aren't simply gun fighters, they also feature BAE's Medusa system, that allows the Spitfire 2 to fire all of it's missiles simultaneously, hitting up to 12 different targets at once, at ranges of up to 30nm.

Though the Spitfire 2 isn't the Mustang II's all around package, and the Wyvern doesn't feature the ability to do the heavy bombing role of the Valkyrie, they both fill a key defense gap in NADC's European commanded and around the world. While the US lacks a true 6th gen carrier fighter, and a true high speed attack plane for wild weasel missions, the UK lacks a modern dedicated high altitude fighter and a strategic bomber. Together though, the USAF and the RAF are an unstoppable force.
